Peer Listener Program
What is the Peer Listener Program?
The Temple City High School Peer Listener Program consists of about fifty trained Red Shirts and a trainee program of nearly eighty students from grades nine through twelve. These students, also referred to on campus as "Red Shirts" or "Peer Listeners", have the unique ability to hear and relieve the emotional and physical distresses of their schoolmates.
Peer Listeners are selected through an application and interview process early in the school year. After these exclusive few are selected, they will undergo a series of rigorous trainings dealing with mild to extreme situations, such as; peer pressure, drugs, alcohol, death of a loved one, sexuality and stress caused by their peers or family environment. The training takes a full year meeting once a week for two hours.
With the Peer Listener Program, the three C's; confidentiality, commitment and caring, will always be adhered to. This program thrives on their ability to be honest and trustworthy. Without these characteristics, a program so dedicated and powerful could never exist.
